Monitoring

Monitoring technology is steadily improving. Using RFID technology on a require badge, the location and movements of all employees can be easily tracked. Facial recognition software has improved to the extent that may be possible to recognize and identify people as the pass in front of (hidden) cameras. Is it acceptable to track people as they move within the workplace? Does the IT Professional have any ethical obligation to let people know that such (covert) tracking is taking place?

Are there differences between tracking the movements of employees and tracking the movements of customers or potential customers? What happens if technology improves to the extent that facial identification can be tied to customer information at the point of sale? It's clearly possible to imaging a future in which merchants can track the movements of customers within their stores. Is that ethical? What about the situation where merchants exchange customer facial information. Is it ethical for merchant A to sell, buy, or barter facial information about customers?
