The IFIP World Computer Congress 2006 decided to "initiate a vigorous programme of activity to promote professionalism worldwide". The effort would be managed by a Task Force, led by the BCS (British Computer Society), and include members from ACS (Australian Computer Society) and CIPS. The first meeting of the Task Force was held in Cape Town on January 8th and 9th, 2007. The first report from the Task Force to the IFIP General Assembly was approved in August 2007.
The mandate of the International Professional Practice Programme (or I3P) is:
The I3P Task Force Report describes what are expected to be the main building blocks and standards behind IITP recognition. It presents eight requirements that must be met by a national certifying body that wishes its certificants to be recognized under I3P.
1. The certifying body must identify the type of work its certificants can do, describing the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to undertake that work.
The current plan calls for I3P to establish certification standards that can be used in auditing national IT certification schemes. Full IFIP members may apply for assessment against these certification standards, or they may use the process to review (audit) their national IT certification practices with a view to identifying possible improvements. Some provisions are being made for non-IFIP member associations to have their national IT certification practices reviewed (audited).
